NV5600 CONVERSION

This site is intended to document what we did to keep our 2001 Dodge 3500 4 X 4 on the road after three (3) failed NV5600 transmissions. New Venture quit making the transmission and also quit supporting the product with parts. There are numerous off-shore companies attempting to make parts, however the reliability issues keep coming up. We have had a lot of discussion on the Cummins Forum http://www.cumminsforum.com as a few others will be making the change-over as well.

After many weeks of research, we decided that the FSO-6406 or the FSO-8406 Eaton Fuller transmission would be the best fit. This is a heavier duty transmission series used in mid-size trucks, is synchronized and has overdrive. The only draw back that we noted was that the transfer case on the 4 X 4 would have to be divorced. The NV5600 had the transfer case married to the transmission.

All your planning and research go out the window when a bargain comes along. While grazing through Ebay, a Eaton Gear Reducer FO-8406A-ASX was listed. We bought it for $152.50. Core value is $1000. Within a week, our jewel was on the door step. The photo gallery will document our transformation.

Our 2001 Dodge 3500 4 X 4 with 112,000 miles had had the NV5600 transmission fail for the third time. None of the shops had any answers when we requested something other than the troublesome NV5600. That's when we started looking around at other possibilities.
