Pole Barns

This page will take you through the process of how we built this 26' x 45' work shop on the principal of pole barn construction.

Materials used

Utility power poles @ $.50 per foot

    I-beams, 10W used @ $1.00 per foot

Purlins, 4" UniStrut, New surplus, @ $.50 per foot

    Metal Roof, new Mueler, $645

Insulation, new surplus, purchased at auction, $75 total

PVC liner, new roll end, $105

This forklift was purchased at auction for $1000.  Couldn't have done all this work

without it.  All work shown on these pages was accomplished by one person.

Pole held in position while back filling the hole.  All poles were set 5'-0"

into the ground.

Poles set and aligned

Trusses were built with 10W I-beam and full welds.

View of completed truss

This is the method used to tie the pole to the truss.  The pole tops were cut at the same angle as the truss to create a flat resting point.  Not shown are the through bolts used to connect the pole to the truss.

Pole and truss connector assembly.  Through bolts not shown.

Even a slight wind can topple the building at this stage.  Took precautions to

ensure that all work was secure by tying one truss to another and applying

tension with two forklifts and a come-a-long.

A 4" X 4" L X 20'-0" was used to tie the trusses together and provide for sidewall attachment.  A 2" X 4" "C" channel was used as a girt to add more stiffness to the

assembly.

New surplus 4" UniStrut is used for purlins.
